Innovative thinking and a commitment to his community helped local legal expert Jason Goode gain recognition as a finalist in prestigious law awards.

Jason Goode is a leader in his community and a leader in law.

For the last two years Jason has been the joint President of the Riverina Law Society and is also currently a member of Temora Shire Council.

Additionally, for the last 30 years Jason has worked tirelessly to support and help bring much needed attention to the issues that are unique to our region.

This is part of what makes this home grown legal expert such a worthy finalist for the NSW Law Society’s Rural Practitioner of The Year award.

“I see it as my responsibility to give these issues a voice. By being a regional president and regional council member, I can raise issues that are important to my community in the hopes that solutions can be found.

“Although travelling to and from Sydney for my Law Society commitments takes a lot of time out of the practice, I see my commitment to these committees as a benefit for both my practice and my community. They keep me up to date with the latest reforms made to law and practice. They also provide me with an opportunity to help my community raise issues at the highest level in the hopes that solutions can be found and implemented.”

Building stronger communities

Another reason for Jason’s finalist nomination is his passion for building stronger local towns and regions. Jason believes that the lifeblood of any regional community is the younger generation and providing jobs and careers for them is essential for the town’s survival.

His commitment to local jobs for local people led Jason to introduce a nurturing program for local school leavers. As a consequence, this gave young locals the opportunity to commence their law careers without having to leave their communities for study. Also allowing school leavers to stay in the towns where they were raised providing local law experts in multiple towns across the region.

Previously, towns like Temora, Narrandera, Cootamundra and West Wyalong (where Farrell Goode practices) have suffered from a lack of professionals. By encouraging local students to study law, and paying for their study, these towns have now more solicitors which will in turn allow more access to justice in these regions.

Jason has also used his position as both president of the Riverina Law Society and a member of the rural issues committee to agitate for improved services and audio-visual links in regional courthouses.

Giving back to the community

Jason’s nomination was also assisted by the work he does within his community. Jason nurtures the legal minds of the future through his work as a mock law coach for the Temora high school in the mock law competitions. He provides free legal advice to many local organisations including local sporting clubs and local not for profit organisations in the towns where Farrell Goode practices. He also provides pro bono advice to clients who either cannot afford legal advice, or just need some advice to get them out of trouble.

Jason has previously been on the criminal panel for legal aid and has been an independent child’s solicitor in matters involving Department of Community Services.

His dedication and loyalty to his community has produced a stronger and more supported region. Above all, this makes Jason such a worthy recipient for recognition with this award.
